My Elemental Journey

The fellowship of the conference, the re-uniting with old friends and family, and the magic of Victoria’s sun, eagles, and hummingbirds beckoned to my heart as the sea breeze gently whispered, “rest child, you belong here”.

Nina Zettl, Freedom From Within, Yoga, Reiki and Doula Services – 2019 VYC Ambassador – Saskatoon

Nina lives in Saskatoon with her husband and four beautiful children. She is the owner of Freedom From Within and is also a Registered Yoga Teacher, Registered Prenatal Yoga teacher, Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider, Birth Doula and Reiki Master.  Her journey with yoga began as a young girl when her mother practiced asana and meditation with her as a way to help decrease asthma symptoms. Over the past ten years, she has been practicing, studying and teaching yoga throughout Saskatoon and Saskatchewan.  To Nina, yoga is a sacred journey of exploration, connection and unity. Each time she hits the mat, she gains a deeper awareness and understanding of herself and the world around her. She becomes more present, more in touch with her truth, more compassionate and more connected.

I am a Victoria Yoga Conference Ambassador, and this is my second year attending the conference representing the city of Saskatoon. Yet again, it exceeded my expectations. I flew in from Saskatoon and from the moment I entered Victoria, I felt my heart space expand. I spent a few days crafting my schedule and was so impressed with how well it flowed throughout the weekend. The mental, physical and energetic components of yoga are very important to me and the schedule allowed for exactly that. The first day, I was met by some lovely yogis who kindly offered their help finding the building housing the opening ceremonies. Immediately, I felt the deep sense of community and connection and this theme was woven in through the entire weekend. Each and every offering spoke to my soul and was in awe at how much it resonated with me as a person, a yoga teacher, and a humble student of life.

I had memorable moments connecting to the natural elements. First, I connected to the primal element of fire with the movement meditation and Kapalibhati breath during opening ceremony, serving as a gift of clearing and ignition. This prepared me to connect to the element of water at Lunar Yoga which revolved around the art of surrender, fluidity and the subconscious space. I was then able to connect to both the element of ether and space through the Ancestor Healing and Connection Workshop. I ended the day with deepening my relationship to the earth element through Eoin Finn’s Open Heart, Open Hips workshop where I left with the overwhelming sense grounding and freedom. Sunday landed me in the spacious and gracious arms of the element of air and this is where I did my deepest work, processing the last bits of old wounds surrounding life force and breath. I felt unified working on my heart, and past trauma and in the final hours of the conference it truly brought it all together through the Skill of Chill workshop. Here I was able to integrate all the new wisdom, strength and love I attained from the weekend and really felt my nervous system melt into the parasympathetic space of rest and relaxation.

The weekend allowed me to take some time from the hustle and bustle of being a private business owner and a mother of four. To be honest escaping the frozen plains of Saskatchewan for a weekend was enough for me. The fellowship of the conference, the re-uniting with old friends and family, and the magic of Victoria’s sun, eagles, and hummingbirds beckoned to my heart as the sea breeze gently whispered, “rest child, you belong here”. To the organizers of the Victoria Yoga Conference, my sincerest thanks for your hard work, see you next year!
