Why are you excited/happy/committed to sharing your wisdom at the 2020 Victoria Yoga Conference?

I love making the annual trip to the Victoria Yoga Conference each Winter from small town Tofino! Gathering with the west coast yoga/wellness community always fills my cup with warmth, inspiration and so much to bring back home and share with my own community.

The theme of the 2020 conference is ‘love is medicine’. What does this mean to you?

My late Grandma Janet always told me that hugs were the best medicine. Her hugs were always full with unconditional love. I believe that finding that source of unconditional love within ones own self can be the greatest source of freedom.

What is your morning ritual?

My best days begin with a big mug of hot water, silent meditation, a tarot card draw, movement of some sort… then coffee. Though I don’t always have time for all of the above, I make sure to give myself enough space to move slowly and enjoy some quiet time before attending to my work tasks and responsibilities.

How do you manage stress or overwhelm?

My work usually includes a full inbox and a growing list of to-dos that I’ll never get to the bottom of. When I am tired or have a lot on my plate this can sometimes lead to feeling stressed and overwhelmed, when this happens my best medicine is to get outside and move my body. Being outside in nature, a beach walk or stroll through the forest always brings a sense of grounding to my being.

How do you build community?

As owner of Coastal Bliss Yoga in Tofino, BC, I am passionate about building Tofino’s yoga community and holding space that is inclusive, supportive and adaptive to our community’s needs. I am fortunate to work alongside a wonderful group of teacher’s and community leaders who share this passion and dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive environment where we can all gather together under one roof.

Do you have favourite mantras or words of nourishment that you return to to soothe or motivate yourself?

One meditation that I often come back to is the Metta or Loving Kindness Meditation from the buddhist tradition. I come back to this practice as a form of mind protection from negative thought patters. Or, when I find myself in a state of worry for other people beyond my control I’ll begin each phrase with ‘May You…“. It is a simple practice, silently repeating compassionate phrases directed either to oneself or to others. There are many versions of the phrases, here is one I like to use, “May I be filled with loving kindness, May I be happy, May I be peaceful and at ease, May I know love.”
