The Practice of Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra came to me in one of my teacher trainings a few years ago. I was (and am) a very driven yogi, who loves to explore, push and go further, so it was a huge surprise to me to find so much satisfaction from such a “slow” practice. Yoga Nidra is an ancient technique that was developed to slow down the brain and allow the body to heal itself by taking the participant through a guided mediation.
It allows you to change your relationship with your thoughts. It also allows you to stop arguing with people, places and things. It allows you to get out of the fight or flight mode of modern life, and brings you back to a place of living with joy. All by simply doing…….NOTHING! The participants simply allow themselves to be guided by the voice of the instructor, and in a relaxed, semi sleepy state, their subconscious takes care of the rest!
There are countless benefits to yoga nidra. Brain studies show that 11 hours of yoga nidra changes the way we think, the way our brain is wired, and reacts. It engages the parasympathetic nervous system, slows the heart rate & allows the body to relax and let go of ingrained tension in the body. The participant is asked to find their intention as they begin. An intention is a life affirming direction that you can decide upon, that is then placed in the meditation when the brain can accept it without dialogue or debate. The intention starts to manifest in your life without you doing anything about it. That is why yoga nidra is such a profound way to make shifts in your life without a lot of mental activity. It’s truly magical in my opinion.
From a child we start acquiring habits and patterns and these impact the way we see/do things, which then become things that hold us back, that inhibit our ability to see just how happy and joyful our lives can truly be. As we come up with our intention, we come more in line with what we can do to make our lives the best they can be. The intention becomes reinforced so that when we’re in our waking state our intention becomes reality because we bypass the “samskaras” or programming that we’ve picked up since childhood. How awesome is THAT!
I’m sure that it’s safe to say that everyone around has felt rushed, stressed out, pressured, and simply exhausted. After racing around trying to attend each holiday party, shop for the right gifts, and still get all our regular duties done, everyone was likely met with the overwhelming feeling that it’s a bit too much. For this reason, why not take the time to find what life truly means to you by slowing down and finding your intention. What better gift can you give yourself and the ones you love, than the gift of healing without having to look to an external source. It’s the gift that keeps on giving because yoga nidra is something you can come back to over and over again. It’s a constantly giving gift of change. And who couldn’t use that?
Next time you’re struggling to find balance in your life, I ask that you please turn to this ancient wisdom. I want you to have the most radiant, amazing life possible, and i know that YOU can create it!
