5 ELEMENTS - Saturday - 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm - Extended Workshop

Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. The world is out of balance and it is our work as yogis to heal this planet. Connecting with the five elements allows us to attune the rhythms and cycles of our own beings, our planet and to all that is the universe. Throrugh consciously working with the elements, we learn how to move towards balance, lightness and freedom. Ryan's teaching and practice is to honour the five elements and to restore harmony. Our disrespect of the Mother Earth and Father Sky has to stop. [lecture + asansa 2.5 hours]

Dynamic and inspirational, Ryan Leier brings his unique energy to every class he teaches. Whether in his own One Yoga studios or as an ambassador of yoga to communities around the world, his expression of this ancient, yet vital tradition consistently touches people's hearts. Ryan is a firm believer that, through steady practice and devotion, all people—regardless of age, gender, race or religion—can experience the Oneness of Yoga. Ryan is primarily a student of the Krishamacharya yoga lineage and continues to study under Father Joe Pereira, by whom he was authorized to teach. Ryan trains with Baron Baptiste, Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane (Maya), Danny Paradise, Srivatsa Ramaswami (Vinyasa Krama). He also received instruction from Ashtanga Guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Ryan is rooted in local sacred teachings. He studies and serves the Elders in his home province of Saskatchewan (which comes from the Cree word kisiskaciwani-spiv meaning "swift flowing river").

ADVANCED YOGA FOR EVERYONE - Sunday - 11:00 am to 12:15 pm

What defines advanced yoga practice? A common misconception of Yoga is that it is all about the attainment to "sexy" poses. This class will challenge you to get deeper into poses you thought you already knew and teach you to explore find inspiration within your own body, giving you tools to get to those "sexy" poses, but with the right steps the bring your body into alignment. Foundations are crucial in everything we do, and this class will ensure that your foundations are leading you away from injury and towards freedom.

Kristine "Piper" Doiron's exploration of the science of yoga has led her around the world and back. What started off as a means to get back into shape, has evolved into a lifestyle that brings her balance and fills her with gratitude on a daily basis. She loves to share the balance that she has found through the practice of yoga in teacher trainings, workshops, and classes around the world. Her goal is to inspire those who practice with her to connect with their own inner teacher, and to develop a sustainable practice that brings their body into balance and gives them freedom of body and mind.

ANATOMY OF CORE - Sunday - 8:00 am to 9:15 am

Become a next-level teacher as you learn the most cutting-edge anatomy and alignment cues to turn any pose or flow into a student-attracting, safer and much more effective experience for everyone. This can mean increased class sizes and opportunities to share your knowledge in workshops, retreats and beyond. Part lecture/discussion part asana.

A PRACTICE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING - Saturday 11:00 am to 12:15 pm
Our hips are associated with the second Chakra, emotions stored in the deep waters of our unconscious. Deeply held emotions result in tightly held patterns of the energetic and physical body. Bringing these patterns to the light of awareness at the heart centre can be challenging, but is necessary for healing. Our hands are directly connected to our heart through the fourth Chakra. This class, for intermediate and advanced yogis, will release the hips while simultaneously building strength and balance in the hands, building the resolve to see these patterns for what they are - temporary.

Like many people, Fabrizio Alberico came to yoga and meditation as part of a quest to optimize his physical health and calm his mind. As powerful as those effects were, it didn't take him long to realize that he had tapped into a vast ocean of wisdom extending back several millennia, manifesting itself right there in his own mind and body. That sense of wonder about himself and others continues to live in his teaching practice today. Whether it's teaching asana, pranayama, meditation, training new Yoga Teachers, or leading Kirtans, he always seek to find the manifestation of the Universal in the Particular.

BACKBENDS - THE HEART OF A LION - Sunday - 9:30 am to 10:45 am

We do not always live from our hearts, backbends give us a chance to open up to our potential to love, we move from the illusion of separateness to the realization of Oneness. According to BKS Iyengar, backbends combat depression, energize our systems, and most importantly open our hearts. Ryan guides students through transitioning into these asana's with confidence using the breath and power of the body + mind. The backbends that will be explored in this workshop are accessible to all levels.

ESTATIC YOGA: A KARMA TEACHERS JOURNEY - Sunday - 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm

Ecstatic yoga was originally created by Karma Teachers founder, Emerson Lim, as an exciting way to engage homeless youth and meet them where they are, by introducing them to the benefits of yoga (Kundalini inspired kriyas) and breath work while triggering a natural high through the therapeutic elements of dance, such as brain dance and ecstatic dance, while creating a space that is truly welcoming and incredibly fun at the same time. Set to to the most exciting music of our time and sometimes with live djembe drummers. Everyone is welcome from toddlers to seniors. Special needs are very welcome.

Yoga transformed Emerson Lim's life and he wants to share it with others. He wants to teach from his heart and be of service to others by sharing yoga selflessly and free of charge. He started Karma Teachers along with many brave yogis to answer a higher calling and to listen to the inner guru and surrender to the lessons that it wants to impart.
He teaches regularly to homeless youth with a focus on liberation, healing and self acceptance. He also teaches kids classes which includes kids with ADD, ADHD and Autism. At Karma Teachers, he teaches ecstatic yoga.

LEARNING TO SEE WITH THE HEART: THE PATH OF YOGA - Saturday - 9:30 am to 10:45 am

In the tradition of yoga, there are many paths, many philosophies -- each is valid and has its own beauty and usefulness. Yet, if we look to the essence of all practices of Yoga, we will discover a commonality -- all of these teach us to see with the heart. Learning to see with the heart is a journey of profound implication. It is a state of unbounded being, held within a container of deep humanity. As we access the eyes of the heart, what is transmitted is something that goes beyond words -- we yoke ("yoga") with the exquisite present moment, and unfold into the heart of all beings.

ROOTS AND SHOOTS - HISTORY OF YOGA - Saturday - 4:15 pm to 5:30 pm

In this multimedia workshop, we will go back 5,000 years to the roots of Yoga as it began in the Indus Valley, and trace its fascinating evolution through many incarnations and manifestations. Focusing to a large extent on more recent history (late 1800's to today), we will come to understand some of the most important people and styles of present-day Yoga in the context of its long and noble history extending back to pre-Vedic times. In doing so, we come to understand ourselves and our practice as a unique expression of humanity within the oldest spiritual tradition on Earth.

SELF INQUIRY WITH LIVE MUSIC - Saturday 11:00 am to 12:15 pm

Through the healing rhythms of Craig Paterson and the guiding voice of Whit Hornsberger, an experiential learning environment will be created, allowing your own inquiry through the practice of asana and meditation to reveal that you are the teacher you seek. This 75 minute workshop is crafted to awaken the inner wisdom that will guide you in your own practice, on and off the mat. Drawing from Buddhist psychology and meditation practices and the yogasanas of Hatha, Vinyasa and Yin Yoga, you will be guided to connect to the tools of awakening already present within you and to gain insight: literally the ability to see and feel inside your own body. Stop seeking outside of yourself and look in. It's all happening.

Whit Hornsberger discovered yoga after tearing his ACL in his last year of a five year career playing basketball for the University of Calgary. It was a devastating end to a successful career and to his childhood dream of playing professionally. Unbeknownst to him at the time, that disappointing turn of events were to open up a two and half year global journey of self-inquiry and introspection. Whit's teaching style derives from that inquiry and is laden with Buddhist teachings which have been paramount to his healing. As a teacher his goal is to create an experiential learning environment, whereby everyone feels welcomed and accepted for who and where they are upon their own path. For only when we accept ourselves exactly as we are, can we then begin to change.

Craig Paterson is a performer, composer and instrument maker based on Salt Spring Island, BC. For the past 12 years he has devoted himself to the exploration of the healing power of music and sound vibration. This devotion has led him to study many ancient world instruments and their traditional music, from the power of West African percussion to the deep meditative melodies of world flutes. A typical performance is filled with magical instruments from around the world, as well his own beautiful exotic creations. His music explores the balance between sound and space, and is intended to connect to an ancient memory and an open heart.
